Traffic data from SAM2 devices

A SAM2  is a vehicle activated sign that displays and records the speed of an approaching vehicle.

The Parish Council own two SAM2's.  These are mobile units and are moved around the village on a regular basis.

SAM2 locations

For each location the Parish Council needs a licence from Norfolk County Council Highways department to mount a SAM2.  These are the locations that the Parish council currently has licences for.

SAM 2A Comments:

There has been an issue with the radar clock being out of sync with live time. This has caused some errors with accurate timings of events, such as the timing of peak traffic movements. Data for November shows a decrease in volume of traffic coming from Salhouse  by about 100 vehicles per day. Data for vehicles travelling in excess of 30 mph was broadly the same as last month.

May 2024 data

The following is a summary.

SAM 2A (original SAM):

Location:

On Salhouse Road (B1140) adjacent to wherry gardens bus stop facing going towards Salhouse.

Period:

30.04.24 to 30.05.24

Data:

Total vehicles:45,449  (an average of approx 1,511 vehicles per day).   Max speed recorded:
50mph recorded 04.05.24  @ 16:20

Vehicles exceeding 30mph:
Approximately 42 to 46% of vehicles

SAM 2A Comments:

The monitor was turned around '180 degrees' to collect data for the traffic going in opposite direction  (ie towards Salhouse) during May. Prior to May it had been recording data for traffic coming into Wroxham.
The volume of traffic travelling to Salhouse (when compared with traffic travelling towards Wroxham) was slightly lower (by about 150 vehicles per day). However regarding vehicles exceeding the 30mph limit, there was a slightly higher amount. The difference being about 4% more. The monitor will remain in this position for June / July to give a more accurate picture of vehicle movements travelling towards Salhouse over a longer period. _______________________________________________________________________________

SAM 2B (new SAM):

Location:

Norwich Road (A1151), lamppost 30 adjacent to social club. Facing traffic coming from Norwich.

Vehicles exceeding 30 mph:
Approximately 11 to 16% of vehicles

SAM 2B (New) Comments:

Daily traffic volumes for May were  significantly higher  than the previous month by about 1000 vehicles per day. Possibly due to holiday period traffic. Vehicles exceeding 30mph were about the same as previous month.  General Comments:

March 2024 data

Here is the SAM data for the period  29.02.24 to 30.03.24

The following is a summary.

SAM 2A:

Location:

On Salhouse Road (B1140) adjacent to wherry gardens bus stop facing traffic coming into Wroxham.

Period:

29.02.24 to 30.03.24

Data:

Total vehicles:51,102  (an average of approx 1,644 vehicles per day).   Max speed recorded: 65mph recorded 15.03.24  @ 09:40

Vehicles exceeding 30mph: Approximately 41 to 45% of vehicles

SAM 2A Comments:

Volume of vehicles shows a slight increase on the February data by about 100 vehicles per day. Vehicles travelling in excess of 30mph is almost identical to February data, at 41 to 45%. This Salhouse Road continues to be the main  location in Wroxham  for volumes exceeding 30 mph.

_______________________________________________________________________________

SAM 2B:

Location:

Norwich Road (A1151), lamppost 30 adjacent to social club. Facing traffic coming from Norwich.

Period:

29.02.24 to 30.03.24

Data:

Total vehicles:
200,616 (an average of approx 7,716 vehicles per day).  [note that data between 26th and 30th March was not recorded due to flat battery so daily figure adjusted accordingly from 6445 to 7716].
Max speed recorded:
85 mph recorded 01.03.24 @ 08:20

Vehicles exceeding 30 mph:
Approximately 14 to 20% of vehicles

SAM 2B (New) Comments:

Daily traffic volumes for March  were higher than the previous month by about 900 vehicles per day. Vehicles exceeding 30mph were about the same as previous month. There was one significant speed recorded at 85mph, which is quite extreme for morning rush hour. It is possible this could have been a malfunction (for no other reason than travelling at 85 mph at 08:20 would be extremely dangerous at this location), however 2 vehicles were recorded at 70 mph. 5 at 65 mph and 25 at 60mph. Although this represents a very small proportion of the 200,000 vehicle movements, travelling at double the speed limit is not safe.

General Comments:
The monitors will remain in the same positions for April. (SAM 2A on Salhouse Road facing traffic coming into Wroxham and SAM 2B on lamppost 30 Norwich Road facing traffic coming into Wroxham.
More detail can be found in the attachments for both  SAM 2A (old SAM) and SAM 2B (new SAM) If anyone would like any more information or further clarification (or if you spot any errors) please let me know and I will be more than happy to help.

February 2024 data

Here is the SAM data for the period  31.01.24 to 28.02.24

The following is a summary.

SAM 2A (old one):

Location:

On Salhouse Road (B1140) adjacent to wherry gardens bus stop facing traffic coming into Wroxham.

Period:

 01.02.24 to 28.02.24

Data:

Total vehicles:41523  (an average of approx 1535 vehicles per day).   Max speed recorded: 60mph recorded 07.02.24  @ 23:05

Vehicles exceeding 30mph: Approximately 41 to 47% of vehicles

SAM 2A Comments:

Monitor moved to Salhouse Road (facing traffic coming into wroxham) on 01.02.24. Comparing data with data recorded at this position (during February 2022) volume shows a decline by about 440 vehicles per day. Vehicles travelling in excess of 30mph also declined compared to February 2022 (down by about 15%). This is possibly due to the 30mph zone being expanded further towards Salhouse. However 41 to 47% s still a high proportion of traffic volume that exceed 30mph.

_______________________________________________________________________________

SAM 2B (new one):

Location:

Norwich Road (A1151), lamppost 30 adjacent to social club. Facing traffic coming from Norwich.

Vehicles exceeding 30 mph:
Approximately 11 to 22% of vehicles
